In 1922 In A Grove by Ryūnosuke Akutagawa was published, an unassuming but remarkable story that played with form and readers' perception. In 1950 Akira Kurasawa adapted it to the beautiful film Rashomon, mixing ancient theatrical tradition with modern techniques and groundbreaking innovations . Almost every director who has come after Kurasawa would cite this seminal work as inspiration.
